My least favourite memory loss trope is when someone loses their memory and so they become a different version of themselves and gradually they begin to not want their memories back because they like this new version, and they start rejecting help because of it. I especially hate it when there is another character who cares for them and wants nothing more than for the person to remember them, but the person is on a whole “maybe I don’t want my memories back, did you think of that?” Ughhh.

Writers use memory loss to be a character wipe instead of the inherently traumatic experience it oughta be

Also no one is making jokes about the memory loss in fiction. When my dad had his strokes, all of us, him and us kids, made so many jokes about it. It was the best way to acknowledge the memory loss and move forward while accepting the moment.

read a fanfic that had the MC's memory wiped halfway through after establishing and setting up relationships so it straight up reset the story and it legit made me so angry I hit my phone against the edge of my bed while I was facepalming, core memory, I've never seen memory loss done well in stories

One of my oc’s keeps reincarnating but is slowly loosing the memory’s of her previous lives the more she’s reborn, because you only have so much room to remember

This is one of those things that I love in (relatively short) fanfictions, but I don’t think I’ve ever genuinely enjoyed it in regular fiction 😂😭

I kinda like what happens in Son of Netptune where Percy spends like the entire first half of the book just being frustrated by and actively searching for his lost memories

This is actually so helpful for my oc because he has the memory loss trope but hes extremely curious because of it so now im gonna make him far more proactive on figuring out his memory loss and his whole situation I'd explain the whole thing but like i dont wanna comment a lot and annoy you lmao

In an anime called Black Butler (season 2) they used the memory loss trope and It was a disaster. First thing you need to understand is that the first two seasons of this anime are complete anime-only. The anime is making everything up. The character that lost his memories (his name is Ciel) doesn't remember the events of the entire S1. Ciel is an incredibly intelligent and untrusting person that's a master manipulator. He would have clocked something is wrong in less then a day and found out the truth in minutes afterwards. Instead they made him not even realise he's missing his memories for almost the entire season, constantly get pushed around by both the characters and the plot and get manipulated by everyone around him. It was bad

I mean tbf I was NOT pro-active about my own memory loss, but in my defence the memory loss was just one of many cognitive issues I was having due to a health problem so I didn’t really realise anything was wrong for an embarrassingly long time

I want a story where they seek out a way to help with their amnesia/memory loss but upon learning who they used to be they begin running AWAY from their past because, as a "fresh slate" so to speak, they now realize how vile of a person they used to be. The only time I've ever seen a story do this was a webtoon called PIGPEN and I've been looking for another story like that ever since

this is why the only things I can think of that have memory loss that I still like are Doctor Who where the whole schtick is them trying to record everything they need to know, and A Long Kiss Goodnight where the plot kicks off because she's exhausting every avenue she possibly can to figure out what she can't remember

I personally hate it when the characters and relationships are established and then it’s all GONE. Like, these people are new, i can’t empathize or relate because they aren’t the characters they were built to be. They lose their growth. Like the good place
