WW1 tactics were willllld. The sheer audacity and insensitivity of it all is staggering.

Loved the historical info. Your book's cover is a bit off-putting for me. Just my two cents. Best of luck to you.

You gotta read "Into the Slaughter" by French Veteran Jean Giano who talks about his experience as a masculine A-type working in construction, getting into bar fights and turned into a pacifist After surviving 10 months in verdun

And it could have been so much worse!! Bad weather delayed the initial attacks losing Germany and element of surprise meaning they couldn’t take better positions(across the river with higher ground and better coverage) before French reinforcements arrived and Falkenhayn didn’t commit as many troops as he had originally intended. If either of these things had happened or if Petain hadn’t done an incredible job with his troop cycling France could have been knocked completely out of the war by early 1917

The thing that boggles my mind is you can visit Verdun today and still see all the scars from the artillery.

I like the concept of brutalization that this coincides with. Where societies become numb to the costs and carnage of industrialized warfare.

Verdun didn’t break the morale of the French military. Large scale mutinies didn’t happen until a year later after unsuccessful offensives. In fact France cycling troops through Verdun was A STRENGTH. The Germans did not cycle troops around and in the end they were broken by a decisive French counterattack.

Though not French, one of my favorite parts of the movie 1917 is the disillusionment of Scofield. He looks and acts like someone broken by an earlier battle like you said.
