U cant tell dispatch to dispatch you. Now if you are on a support team or a sort team for your county then when it gets toned u can go. U cant get yourself toned to a fire outside your district now u cant go and tell dispatch ur on scene but turn it over when the right dept shows up

This is a jurisdiction but jurisdiction policy. Some depts can not and will not self dispatch.

30 yr in fire service here, 3 different departments. If a walk in report or direct call to station, we call via radio or phone for dispatch to open a cad and tone for on call personnel.

I'm trying to make sense of that comment and why you called the fire station directly? Yeah, if 9-1-1 doesn't answer it's because allllll those other drivers around you on the road are also trying to call 9-1-1. There's only so many people working at a time; theres no "infinite dispatcher" hack that I'm aware of. Also, fire departments don't "ask to be dispatched" to a fire in their territory - and as an aside the station you called might not even have been the closest station or the one responsible for the area where the vehicle fire was located.

Seeing the comments different areas have different policies which is sad! You call a station we call Dispatch and roll not our area we would call the nearest station to you! Also just FYI Call HP if on the Highway

Yes, it is called self dispatching and so let’s say for example I’m traveling down the road and I noticed a accident. I can notify dispatch about the situation and then I can request to be shown on scene since I am the primary person there. What would happen is once I am self dispatched and shown on scene. A supervisor would also be dispatched to the scene so I could give them an idea of what I saw when I approached the scene and then go from there. It’s a lot more common than people think.

After watching the og video, yeah we can definitely call in to dispatch. Yes, we do have to be “dispatched” to have a run number, but that’s why we say “start me a time and number for a vehicle fire at …..” If we weren’t able to do that, people wouldn’t be able to walk into stations and require ems. Same thing. Only benefit is that dispatch sends the appropriate other units, so once they dispatch it, any other unit typically dispatched on the type of call will get dispatched the normal way.

I work EMS dispatch and we get walk ups all the time, or certain areas sometimes the crew will get a call directly to them because they know them, and all it takes for our system is just asking for a run and the location of the call. Agencies are different but I don’t see how this would be something that other agencies can’t do. I’m a little baffled.

Yeah if I find out there's an accident in my jurisdiction before I'm ever told by dispatch. guess what? not only are we going we will be telling dispatch to make us a cad because we don't answer to dispatch dispatch answers to us. they are there to assist us

You can call the station but you’re better off calling 911. We might not be there to answer the home but also for instances where we can’t find the address or need additional info we have no way to reach you bc odds are your not gonna answer a random number in an emergency

Dude if you don’t have a halon fire extinguisher good luck. I tried putting out an engine fire (fuel line) and until some dude pulled over and put it out with halon absolutely nothing worked, gasoline definitely burns well.

I’m a firefighter. We don’t ask to be dispatched sometimes. We go and tell dispatch we are going and they can pout to their computer about it.

We tell people to call 911. We had an inmate in jail across the country that would call stations and say their house was on fire and they were trapped. In reality he was just doing it to harass his ex-gf. Had her house swatted too by calling the police station directly. Can’t call 911 if you arent local.

We do it when a member of the community calls one of us directly so we radio in to dispatch and asked to be toned out. That tone, while on our own frequency, it picked up by all the other county departments on scan mode and they will have a heads up that an event is happening in case we need mutual aid later or something.

If it's a fire there's no point in sticking around —we can usually find it ourselves. But if it's for a medical emergency or you saw some person passed out —then please do stick around. And yes we can radio in to dispatch for them to page a crew out — or to tell them we're heading there to check it out.

If we come across a situation we'll stop, advise what we have and where we are. Say we are in a neighboring jurisdiction then they would usually dispatch them and advise we are there, sometimes they will ask if we want them to continue to knock out so and so.
