@healingbythenumbers_: Welcome to That Was Abuse, where I share moments from my 10-year abusive marriage while getting ready for the life I have now. Most of these won’t sound extreme. They’re just the ones that I now realize were GIGANTIC red flags. ... Episode 9: The iPhones Two months into dating, he bought me my first iPhone. I didn’t ask for it and I felt awkward accepting something so expensive. But he insisted—said my “dorky” sliding keyboard phone had to go. Funny how generous gifts feel like love... until you realize they were tied to control. A few days later, he asked me to hold his brand-new iPhone while he played volleyball. It slipped out of my pocket, hit the cement, and cracked the screen. I was horrified. I apologized over and over. I offered to replace it, even though I had no money. He hugged me and said it was okay. “No big deal.” But less than a year later, that version of him was gone. He never let me forget I once cracked his phone. Not in ten years. Love bombing isn’t just about grand gestures. It’s about making you believe kindness is who they are— So you’ll blame yourself when it disappears. It took me 11 years to leave. But this was the start. That was abuse. … ✨ If you’ve ever felt like you “owed” someone for their kindness, only to be punished for messing up later—stick around. And if you’re wondering when it all began— Maybe it was earlier than you thought. 💔 #healingbythenumbers #getreadywithme #thatwasabuse #SurvivorStories #lovebombing

for the first two years of my relationship....I kept waiting for the other foot to drop. It never happened....I was well trained from the many terrible people I dated before my now husband.

I ended things with a guy that was very insistent on gift giving. We were only talking for like 2 months and there were other red flags I noticed. It’s frustrating that no one else sees it as a problem!!!

These stories are exactly the type of things that happen to me, but I have always feel guilty about calling it's abuse. I just know how yucky it makes me feel.

Thank you for these. I can’t save my younger self, but maybe if I had learned these things earlier I could have. I didn’t recognize so many things as abuse. Looking back it all started right away, and lasted for 20 years. I thought his jealousy was kind of cute. The love bombing was that he was so into me. Me! Plain Jane me! Oh sweet summer child I was. Continue the amazing work!

I remember accidentally dropping his iPod that I was playing a game on and cracking it and immediately telling him and apologizing, but the apology was never good enough. I was never remorseful enough. He brought that up for probably the last 11 years of our marriage.

My abusive ex also gave me a nicer cellphone a few months into seeing each other. The kicker was that he didn't factory reset it and it was full of flirty messages to dozens of other girls. The phone itself and leaving the messages on it was very much a controlling tactic.

That’s why most rhe time when people toss around “well pick better men” the answer is that we thought we were. They fake entire personalities.

Yep! I accidentally broke his Lego Star Wars Millenium Falcon that he stashed carelessly on the top shelf of our bedroom closet, when I reached up to pull something down and it slid out and crashed to the floor. He had one it as a prize in an arcade, but I offered to buy him a new one. He refused and said "That's not the point, I don't need you to buy me a new one." 4 years later and he still holds that over my head that I "purposefully break his things." I am now in the beginning stages of my silent escape and can't wait to be out, hopefully by May.
