@gnosticrealms: I highly recommend incorporating your players' character backstories into your world. What they come up with doesn't have to pertain to the plot either. It can just be a fun thing to help flesh out the world or add a new depth to a particular area/subject. Maybe you will even get a cool new story arc idea for the party to explore. Encouraging your players to make a backstory will also help them feel more immersed in your world.
