Spain is enduring its worst wave on record—over 344 ,400 hectares have burned, an area the size of Mallorca—fuelled by a relentless heatwave pushing temperatures beyond 45 °C. Military and civilian firefighters are on the frontlines, battling over 40 active blazes, including those threatening the historic Camino de Santiago route and the slopes of the Picos de Europa. Tragically, four people, including a firefighter, have lost their lives. Across the border in Portugal, more than 216 ,000 hectares have gone up in flames, with two confirmed fatalities.
