There are several world maps the one ur showing is the Mercator which is/was used for navigation because of the lines. There are other maps made to prioritize showing accurate size or spacing, one map(I can’t remember the name) is distorted slightly in every category to make it as accurate as possible and it is already commonly used outside of navigation.
