3rd World was a term used by countries that freed themselves from colonization in the 20th century. They weren’t part of the first world (the colonizing countries), not the second world (USSR and communist aligned countries), they were the third world charting their own path. It’s not a spectrum from good to bad, it’s a historical descriptor. The reason they are associated with poverty is because they dared to not align with the west against the USSR and we destroyed them for it.
