If you are not purchasing your foreign sourced goods DDP (delivered duties paid) then you as the customer/receiver are responsible for the import costs of the goods. So it was not fraudulent, it’s just a lack of knowledge. In this case it sounds like the shipping cost or purchase agreement was DDP because the shipper is being charged the costs to import the goods. There was an $800 threshold, and the receiver could receive goods under $800 (I think including shipping costs) per day. But goods with a China/Hong Kong origin lost that exemption in May. While the tariffs may have been paused, maybe they failed to reinstate the exemption. So even a small order is now being charged the baseline tariffs. When buying goods from overseas just make sure you understand the shipping contract to know which party is covering the duties and tariffs.

I would also question the cost of the tariff. The tariff should not be more than the cost of the item. If the tariff, let’s say is 10% (for easy math purposes), then the tariff would be $9.90 which the company your buying from can set up a process to collect it and have it paid. FedEx was in the wrong here since even with the tariff amount, it should not be more than the cost of the item. Good for you to continue to hold your ground on this!

Nice resolution but keep an eye out, the company may punt it back to you if they never took position of the package once it hit US soil. If they’re a foreign company, technically the cost would be on you but fedex may let it go since it’s so small

The bill was cancelled (most likely due to the tariff changes) but most definitely not forwarded to shipper. It is completely legal for them to charge you a tariff for an item WHEN the tariff is in place at the time of your purchase. Nothing the Consumer protection bureau would do about it. And because it’s legal there’s no grounds for a class action. It’s the consumers responsibility to understand the implications of purchasing an item and brining it into the country. Tariffs aren’t new. This won’t be the last time tarrifs are imposed by this or any other administration. People all over the globe understand this well. I think it’s time Americans realise that there is an entire world (physically and economically) outside of the 50
