They were definitely growing in there! Over watering causes infestation of fungus gnats hence all the fly strips!

He needs to put in horns, my dad installed some that if you are in too long you will become disoriented and will let the neighbors know something is happening. My sister set them off and couldn’t get inside to reset them and she knew where the kill switch was

Look in the attic/crawl space. I found whole grown boxes there once. I kept smelling it and finally found the source.

That is not so bad. I am a realtor and let me tell you I have seen and been in rentals that were actually destroyed. For a rental it’s not too bad.
