@economyvodka: Replying to @badgalzizii The Netherlands is country in Europe that I’ve probably been to the most btw. I’ve been to the sand dunes, hiked, small towns, and of course Amsterdam and other cities. Let me know if you agree or disagree with anything I’ve said in particular bc I’m always curious about my cultural sensitivities in other countries (usually locals always compliment me for my takes but still). I also understand (some) Dutch from living with my host family for 1.5 years. #thenetherlands #voorjou #foryou #dutchtiktok #culture
Yeah, you're completely right. I'm dutch and we have a huge problem with racism. The 'tolerant' façade is very thin. As soon as poc ask for the most basic respect or accomodations the racist venom comes out. It's frustrating.

I am latina and I was SHOCKED by the racism in the netherlands, we were ignored in stores and when we asked for help in an antique store they told us we couldn't afford anything there so don't waste our time. I would never return to the netherlands, ever.

As a person from this country, let me say this: Amen. They love acting like they’re so open and so advanced and not racist at all. The Netherlands and Denmark really are the two countries that are the biggest examples of this.

As a dutch person, you're totally right. We were once very progressive, in terms of racism, lgbqia+, etc. This is definitely not the case anymore.

as a white dutch person, who converted to Islam and now wears a headscarf, I can personally testify that I was treated WAY differently when I was just a "normal" white person. the discrimination and aggression i experience now is in-sane. they treat me like a second grade citizen and below them. people assume im less/not educated, dont speak the language, am a terrorism glorifier and that I'm poor. the contrast is startling, to say the least. but I was already aware of the level of rascism before my change in appearance.

I think a stronger point would be to note how their colonialist past has been erased from their consciousness. They as most of us Europeans are entitled. But their nation's wealth was built on the backs of working people from "3rd world" countries.

Completely true. We legalised gay marriage and euthanasia and stuff and ever since we’ve been telling ourselves we’re the most progressive country in the world and we can do no wrong. Meanwhile, racism and discrimination are still so hardwired in our society, but we refuse to deal with it, because we’re supposed to be a progressive beacon so we deny its existence.

I am half Korean and have lived in the Netherlands my whole life. From my experience, I have dealt with racism since I was a young child. Classmates in elementary school would make racist comments all the time

Don’t mistake tolerance for acceptance. Someone told me that about Dutch culture when I moved here 8 years ago. It took me a while to really understand what they meant, but you eloquently conveyed it here!
