I think both the pirate-y stuff and the collegiate-y stuff share an emphasis on lots of layers and to me, those layers both look like armor against an increasingly hostile world…just different types of armor

keys on belt loop feels like appropriating queer culture in a time when queerness is being pushed back in the closet. similar to padlocked chain accessories in a time when people are being kidnapped off the streets by unidentifiable ICE agents and slavery removed from schools and musuems. not sure how to feel about these choices... is it subversive commentary or is it a distraction to blur the lines of what we should care about?

I love thinking about what the driving forces behind the trend in conservative dressing. I agree with the shift in politics to more conservative leanings influencing the trend you discussed and I also feel there’s simultaneously a sense of more and more women who have progressive politics dressing for themselves rather than the male gaze - the uptick in the “man repeller” styling where I have seen lots of surprising layers and covering of the body. It’s interesting to see these opposing ideologies cross one another with this specific trend.
