Here's the truth: within our community, certain individuals may be perceived as "whitewash" if they don't adhere to specific expectations regarding behavior, speech, or appearance. In my own experience, I was labeled an "Oreo" for embracing alternative and feminine styles, as well as my love of rock music, which led to bullying for wearing black clothing and embracing a goth aesthetic. As I've matured, such comments have subsided, but my fundamental nature remains unchanged. It's essential to recognize that black people are not a homogeneous group and can exhibit diverse preferences. Even my proper speech was criticized as "whitewash." I implore you to approach our experiences with empathy and understanding, rather than dismissing or ridiculing them, as this can cause significant harm.

My example is always T.I. he is well spoken and never accused of sounding white. He sometimes uses 10 dollar words for a 2 dollar sentence but he is unequivocally blacks

I’ll push back by saying I’m from Denver and my cousins from LA made fun of the way I said “California” because I pronounced it correctly literally laughed in my face and said you sound white I didn’t even say it condescending I was asking them a question and this wasn’t kids this was grown adults

I only hung with black kids, and they would say I talk white then one day someone was like let’s record you saying certain words and I was like ok I see what y’all talking about 😂 but never had an issue relating to black people.

I’ve had Black people tell me that they assumed I was whitewashed when they first met me, but they realized, over time that I wasn’t. If people think you’re white washed after they get to know you, it’s because you are

Yeah but I was a straight A student in gifted and taking the piano lessons. I was in a public school. I had long hair and nice clothes. They said I talked white. 🤷🏾♀️it’s ok friend. If you feel bad as a kid because I have proper diction and clean clothes, it makes sense.

I feel like the issue with this topic is that for the most we speak from our own experience as if it’s the only possible answer. I feel like there is no true one answer or explanation, because it’s true that black people are not a monolith and we all have individual personalities and beliefs it’s possible that all of these things have happened to people. It’s equally possible that someone got bullied just for being into alternative or goth culture and another person was disassociated with for having a condescending tone.

Nah some people have literally within 30 secs of meeting me saying “u talk white” , never was a bullying thing but people definitely just say it unprovoked, as an adult and as a child 😂

I was never called whitewashed but I do get told I talk white because I’m autistic and I learned how to talk from books. So I pronounce the hell outta words. Like I annunciate probably a little too much. EVERYONE makes fun of the way I say Atlanta. Especially ppl from Atlanta cause I pronounce every single letter lol.

Nah. Some kids were immature due to the adults. As kids…KIDS, most weren’t whitewashed. There was an expected voice pattern, tone, and vocabulary. No one said i spoke “white” in HS. I was in a very diverse school, that was known for the grades. But in elementary? When my speech was heavily dictated by simply trying to get words out properly, and was a gifted student.. yes, i was referred to as that. And that’s because many people who come from certain bubbles, do not imagine black people being different anywhere else. We’re not talking about people who support white supremacy. A lot of people who called those people white washed have c**n politics. It’s okay to say kids were immature and some people just need therapy to get past childhood trauma of being othered. People who say “you speak white” vs people calling you “whitewashed” are also two entirely different things.

I tell people all the time, children would point out my speech and then get over it bc I am clearly culturally Black once you talk to me for more than a minute. If it was a big problem, idk.

I feel like this conversation is nuanced but chalking up all blk kids that seemed white washed to come off condescending ain’t it…the reality is a lot of kids that come from blk suburbia get picked on for not being blk enough…saying that they’re mostly condescending is just a deflection from it happening to excuse the behavior. We should be willing to understand that we are not a monolith? We don’t want yt people treating us like we are all the same why do we treat our own as such…idk I jus feel like we gotta stop pinning blk suburbia and blk culture or those that are more in tune with the culture against one another assuming they’re all “condescending” bc it’s counterproductive
