It’s the only way they can realistically get all the robins in the DCU without the first 5 movies being only Batman movies. There’s too many robins to have it start with Grayson. So by starting it with Damian and then having movies that take place in the past to build up the others robins it allows the DCU to build itself as a whole while also building up the smaller characters that not every casual fan knows about
