I started this week with the idea that I can only see what I can see from where I'm standing. After spending a week with Step Three of Courageous Curiosity—Seek Another Perspective—I think what surprised me most was realizing just how many different places there are to stand, and how much information becomes available when we're willing to explore them. Another perspective isn't always sitting across from someone and asking what they think. It can come from learning more of the history, listening to someone else's experience, looking at the circumstances surrounding something, noticing a pattern or revisiting an old story with information we simply didn't have the first time around. And somewhere in all of that, I found myself thinking about Steps One and Two again. We can Notice the Assumption and Question the Construct underneath it, but we're still doing that with whatever information we currently have available. If we never venture beyond it, we may be examining the same small piece of a much larger picture. I've spent a lot of my life trying to understand things by zooming in. Looking closer, thinking harder, pulling things apart and trying to figure out what they mean. This week I practiced widening the view instead. I looked through someone else's experience. I stepped farther away from things I'd been standing very close to. I revisited old stories with information I didn't have when they were written, and I even looked at myself through the eyes of people who have known versions of me I've almost forgotten. None of that required me to decide that my original perspective was wrong. It gave me more to work with. And I think that's where this step finally came together for me. We build so much of our understanding from the information available to us at a particular moment in time. We form beliefs, tell ourselves stories, make decisions and sometimes carry those conclusions for years without realizing how much more there might be to know. Seeking another perspective gives us a chance to keep adding to that knowledge. Not so we can endlessly second-guess ourselves, but so the things we believe, the stories we tell and the decisions we make aren't confined to the smallest version of what we know or who we are. Maybe that's what I was really looking for when I started moving around this week. Not a different answer. A fuller understanding. Tomorrow we move into Step Four: Listen Without Preparing Your Defense. Until next time, keep exploring with Courageous Curiosity. 💗
