Ridley was a hired gun. Hired after 5 other directors turned down a green lit fox studio gig. If anything Walter Hill is more of an authority. He took obannon’s script and added flourishes like acid blood and class warfare corporate greed angle and the replicant who are looking out for corporate interests

People get wayyy too hung up on what's Canon or not in these sorts of franchises. At the end of the day, canon doesn't actually matter that much. What matters is the story you're telling in each entry. That supercedes Canon, always.

Who really brought it to life was H.R. Giger. He played a key role in shaping the film’s visual identity, including the designs for the spaceship and the alien environment. Yet his name is mentioned far too rarely, even though he created the Xenomorph and defined the film’s overall aesthetic. Alien and Aliens are both excellent movies. Cameron’s approach is very different, but also great. Still, nothing beats the original. I think the whole idea of connecting Alien to the creation of mankind was just silly—Prometheus should have been its own franchise.
