he will grow up being more compassionate to other people. I am blind my other half is blind we get too hard of hearing kids and our kids except others more than most people and they're always there to help those who may need help. they show compassion to people more than other kids. he will grow up a super strong kind of young man.

My nephews are soon to be 7 & 10 n they tell their friends “ she’s not sick, she’s not different” she’s just a human being whos legs don’t work” they include me in everything they do they adapt with me.

I have SB too and have worked in a preschool, kids usually start picking up that something is different around 4 and once its explained to them in simple terms they move on. I also grew up with two younger brothers one only 2yra younger and he never had to have anything explained to him he just understood that we were different and that it was a part of who I am. The other was several years younger and never knew we were any different, and had to have it explained to him. Mostly that I had health stuff that he didn’t. Your son will grow up with you just being his mommy and to him there isn't anything “wrong” with you.

This is so true. I’ve been very fortunate in the area that I live, kids come to me at the park all the time and ask questions, but almost always it’s “ why are you on wheels?” And never “ what’s wrong with you?” I love curious kids so I think this question is awesome. It makes me think that most parents are saying the right things to their kids about people with disabilities.

He will see you different but he won’t treat you differently he will tell people nothing is wrong with her or he will tell them why your in a chair my daughter is 26 my gbaby is 5 today. Why are you in a chair? My is from a bus wreck

Great post. I feel like my daughter is growing up with me being in a wheelchair just made her stronger and more tolerant. One day when she was about four or five, she looked at me and said when I grow up daddy, I wanna have a wheelchair just like yours. I told her she might not even need one, but if she did, I hope it was as nice as mine. I don’t remember her ever getting these kind of comments, but it’s not surprising that that is out there. I count my wheelchair use as an asset for her in the long run
