I used to be anti-mare. I bought into the stereotype that mares are “ moody,” “hard to work with” and “unpredictable.” I didn’t understand that mares are some of the most in-tune horses you’ll ever meet. They feel everything more deeply. They reflect everything back more clearly. And unlike many geldings, they won’t push their own needs aside just to appease us. A mare will tell you when something is wrong, because she values her own wellbeing. (Much like women’s body’s are seemingly less resilient than men’s because our bodies are continually preparing to grow and carry life - perhaps this is the same influential force that causes mares to speak up more readily?) In a world shaped by patriarchy, we’ve been taught to see those more feminine qualities (sensitivity, honesty, refusal to compromise) as flaws. The same way women are often called “too much,” “too emotional,” or “difficult,” mares have carried those labels too. Add in the fact that Vela is a Thoroughbred, a breed stamped as “too hot,” “too sensitive,” or “too much”, and the stereotypes stack even higher against her. But here’s what I’ve learned since I brought her home: what people dismiss as “too much” is often just truth, felt fully. Because mares, especially more sensitive ones like Vela, don’t perform for our comfort. They invite us into a relationship where we have to listen, soften, and rise to meet them. Every single horse (mare, gelding, stallion, any and every breed) has the ability to connect, trust, and love. What they need isn’t fixing. They need is someone willing to see them for who they are. What label do you hear most often in the horse world that you don’t agree with? #thoroughbredmare #ottb #mare #naturalhorsemanship #equestrian
