A student who is in undergraduate studies interested in becoming a doctor shadowed me. I love training people or being with students because not only can I share my knowledge but I can also share my experience, give tips and advice that I have learned on my own or received from other people. I always mention the pandemic. Maybe I shouldn’t- but it was such an important time in my career, and the world- and future healthcare workers should be informed. I only had one person in my entire career tell me about dealing with a disease that was unknown, and it was during the time when HIV was new. I wish I was able to hear more personal stories about possibly dangerous diseases and taking care of patients during an “unknown and questionable” time. Dealing with the unknown, being empathetic while being burnt out, calling rapid responses, coding patients, being emotional when someone asks you directly “am I going to die?” are all real and raw things that I will never forget.
