![1. What the Qur’an Actually Says About Dogs The Qur’an never labels dogs as najis (impure), never forbids keeping them, and never commands believers to avoid touching or owning them. The only verses that mention dogs are: a) Surah Al-A’raf 7:176 “…his example is like that of a dog: if you drive it away, it pants; or if you leave it alone, it still pants.” • Here, a dog is used metaphorically for persistence in wrongdoing, not to say dogs are haram. b) Surah Al-Kahf 18:18 & 18:22 “…their dog stretched out its forelegs at the entrance…” • This is the famous story of the Companions of the Cave. • The dog is mentioned respectfully as part of a group of righteous youths. • No negative ruling is given — meaning the Qur’an normalizes dogs being close to believers. c) Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:4 “They ask you what is lawful for them. Say, ‘Lawful for you are all good foods and [what is caught for you] by trained hunting animals — you teach them from what Allah has taught you. So eat from what they catch for you…’” • Dogs are recognized as trained helpers in hunting. • If dogs were “impure” or forbidden to touch, this verse allowing eating food they catch would contradict that. 2. What the Qur’an Does Not Say • No verse says dogs are spiritually impure. • No verse says keeping dogs (for protection, companionship, or work) is forbidden. • No verse says you must wash seven times after touching a dog. • No verse says angels won’t enter your house if you own a dog. All of those ideas come from hadith literature and later juristic rulings, not from the Qur’an itself. 3. Qur’anic Lens Summary From a Qur’an-only perspective: • Dogs are part of Allah’s creation, used as positive examples (Al-Kahf) and metaphors (Al-A’raf). • They can serve beneficial purposes (hunting, guarding). • There is no divine command to avoid them. • Treating them with kindness aligns with the Qur’anic ethic of mercy toward all living beings. 4.
