Karbala is the holy land in Iraq where Imam Hussein ibn Ali (A.S) , the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the son of Lady Fatima (A.S) and Imam Ali (A.S) , was martyred on the 10th of Muharram in 680. He refused to give bay‘ah (allegiance) to Yazid ibn Muʿawiya (may allah curse him), a corrupt ruler who destroyed justice and Islamic values. With Imam Hussein (A.S) were the Ahlulbayt and the loyal companions. His brother Imam Abbas (A.S) , the standard-bearer of Karbala, was killed while trying to bring water from the Euphrates to the thirsty children — Ali al-Asghar (A.S) (the six-month-old baby), Sukayna (A.S) , Ruqayya (A.S), and Abdullah (A.S) — who had been denied water for three days. Imam Hussein (A.S) was brutally martyred after watching his family and companions fall one by one. After the massacre, his sister Sayyida Zainab (A.S) stood up against Yazid in his own court and exposed his ظلم (oppression) with fearless words, ensuring that the message of Karbala would never be silenced.
