@ineedalittletreat: Let’s talk about epigenetics! There are hundreds of thousands of studies on this subject, so I take you through a few basic and newer studies highlighting how environment, upbringing, and generational harm can lead to epigenetic changes in us and our offspring. I’m trying my best to dive into complex topics quickly (sub 120 seconds) as well as provide depth and breadth—if you want me to dive deeper into topics like DNA methylation and the mechanisms behind epigenetic modifications, please share! Our country does not do a good job teaching science so I’m trying to make this accessible to a super broad audience. I rushed to put this together after work and an interview so sorry for any mistakes or oversight. Thanks for watching & for any feedback that would help make these videos more helpful or interesting. #fyp #neuroscience #scicomm #DidYouKnow #tiktokuni
Hi Mélisande! Question - Can epigenetics be confused for eugenics? I'm trying to figure out how to properly word my question but it's along that premise...Do you think epigenetics, and it being a very real study, may lead to the confusion of eugenics? I know how to separate the two but when sharing with other people, what language should we avoid that may send someone down an alt-right eugenics pipeline?

I’m totally fascinated by epigenetics. If more people realized we do not have to be defined by our past or childhood, they’d see that our body and brain are equipped to help us become a healthier, better version of ourselves, if we choose to. Thank you for sharing❤️

Generational trauma is beyond real and the secret key to understanding how you exist in the world and why. Thank you for sharing this! Well presented and great to better understanding this topic!

Ah I forgot so much information but please note Agent Orange (AO) is part of the chemical warfare the USA unjustly and brutally used in the Vietnam war. (As Audre Lorde says, the USA has stood on the wrong side of every liberation struggle on earth.) Dioxin is one of the chemicals found in AO. An environmental health scientist Tran Thi Tuyet-Hanh says, “The ongoing burden of disease among exposed populations means that Vietnam’s dioxin legacy remains a significant public health challenge.” And this is 70 years later! We really need more studies on epigenetics especially as it relates to social and racial justice and getting communities the support and reparations they deserve.

Doing a lot of work on real-time HPA axis sensing and modeling. Wasn’t aware of the epigenetic connection. Very insightful.

i love your analogy. when i taught, my go to was legos and epigenetics was the color of the blocks. I think i will use yours instead.
