Then, disaster struck. After driving just about four miles, the old ambulance suddenly coughed and sputtered to a complete halt. It had run out of petrol and the engine broke down! To make matters worse: There were no cell phones back then. The backup cars had already driven far ahead. The Quaid was lying on a stretcher inside a hot, stuffy vehicle with no breeze, and flies buzzing all around his face. Ordinary people and refugees walked past the ambulance, completely unaware that the Father of the Nation was lying helpless inside. It took **over two hours** for another vehicle to finally arrive.
