Timing Belt Disaster! Camshafts Destroyed — EA288 Rebuild. • We are working on a 2018 Volkswagen Crafter equipped with a 2.0 TDI EA288 engine (103 kW). The customer complained about poor engine performance: the motor was sluggish, did not gain RPM properly, and ran unstable. • 📌 The car’s history turned out to be unclear: somewhere the turbocharger had been replaced, somewhere the timing marks “checked,” and supposedly the timing belt was changed. But nothing was certain. During diagnostics, we discovered that the camshaft timing mark was off by about one tooth. After setting the timing correctly and tensioning the belt, the engine actually began to run even worse. This was a direct sign of internal damage, mainly to the camshafts and their bearing housing. • 🔍 Disassembly revealed a common problem for EA288 engines — camshaft lobes had rotated on the shaft. This confirms a critical point: after a timing belt break or jump, camshafts must always be replaced, even if they look intact. The camshaft housing and the shafts themselves are manufactured using hydroforming technology, making them non-separable and installed only as a single assembly.
