Around here farmers, plant the first 20 or so roadside rows with feed corn, and have their sweet corn deeper in the field

We had a feild that we lost about 100-150 feet. We later that night went to a cook out, and when we bit into the “sweet corn” it tasted alittle funny haha

I’m not religious at all but I did grow up in rural America in a farming town. It was known in our town that the Bible said the two outside rows of crops were available so that beggars don’t have to become thieves.

My dad used to do this... And not justifying his theft, but we were literally dirt floor poor with an outhouse back then (early 80s, Wisconsin, indoor plumbing had been around for a minute or two)
Also, field corn can be just as good as sweet... Or maybe just seemingly so when every meal was venison (killed out of season of course), potatoes, and lambsquarters.

This happened to my grandma years ago back east. She spotted someone stealing corn from her field, so she pulled over and asked him what they were doing. The person didn't know she was the property owner and admittedly told her "Oh yeah I stopped by here after work sometimes and bring corn home for dinner. Do you want some?"
She told him "No, I'm okay. You enjoy that. It's just my cattle corn". 😝

I always heard that farmers will put bad corn around the edges for this exact reason.

Shouldn’t matter if you’re a christian - Lev 23:22 “do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God”

When I was a kid my Dad would grab one ear of field corn and cook it with the sweet corn to see if anyone would notice the difference
