Ripple just brought its digital dollar deeper into banking. But does more Ripple adoption actually mean more demand for XRP? On October 15th, Cross River announced support for RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar stablecoin, through its banking platform, with transactions supported on the XRP Ledger. Businesses can move between dollars and RLUSD through one connection alongside traditional bank payments. They don’t have to build the entire blockchain infrastructure themselves. That’s adoption. The token question comes down to fees, reserves and bridging. A standard transaction normally has a minimum fee of 10 drops, or 0.00001 XRP, which gets destroyed. A million transactions at that minimum would burn about 10 XRP. That’s an illustration, not Cross River’s reported volume, and fees can rise under load. A normal ledger account currently requires a base reserve of one XRP. But a million bank customers doesn’t automatically mean a million blockchain accounts. Custodians can serve multiple customers through one address using destination tags. Trades can route through XRP when that offers a better price than trading directly. But moving a dollar of RLUSD doesn’t automatically require buying a dollar of XRP. Cross River hasn’t disclosed payment volumes, an XRP inventory target or a requirement that every payment route through XRP. Services are currently available only in limited states. So watch the payment routes, the XRP balances supporting them and how many new accounts actually need reserves. A partnership tells you who’s in the building.
