yepp same for English saying they're "emigrating" rather than "immigrating" as if immigrant is a dirty word only applicable to POC

The funniest thing I have been hearing recently is ‘we leaving the country because there are too many immigrants in UK’ Oh the irony 🤣😂🤦🏽‍♀️

Immigrant vs. Expat: Both mean a person living outside their home country. The difference is in perception. When a white Westerner moves abroad, they’re called an expat. When a Black, Brown, or non-Western person moves abroad, they’re called an immigrant. The terms are racialised. It’s the same act - leaving your country to live somewhere else - but one word is treated as classy, temporary, professional, while the other is seen as poor, permanent, or a burden. That’s not about language, that’s about racism.

Had this exact chat with someone. “I am actually an Expat” … it’s exactly the same!

This infuriates me! Anyone who moves anywhere is an immigrant in that country.

It’s funnier if you put the “expats” in Spain 🤣 they honestly do not get it!

• “Expat” is usually applied to wealthy, mostly white professionals from the Global North (Americans, Brits, Europeans, Australians) when they move abroad for work or lifestyle reasons. They’re seen as cosmopolitan, adventurous, or skilled specialists. • “Immigrant” (or worse, “migrant”) is typically applied to working-class people from the Global South—especially people of color—who move for survival, low-wage jobs, or refuge. They’re framed as outsiders, burdens, or even threats.

I have had people try to get me to agree that immigrants are ruining our country. My family is not from this country.

This is true 😅 but can same be said for those who are biracial when immigrating from their dad’s ancestors country to their mum’s ancestors country. there should be a term for us maybe ( reconnecting with our mothers / dads ) homeland 😁

I love how snowflakes in the comment somehow forgot the difference between colloquial meaning and legal meanings.
