She was convicted bc of her own behavior. She produced the show and she produced herself to show herself exactly how she acted at that time. Basically no empathy more worried about kissing her boyfriend than crying over her roommate being murdered. On the show, she honestly doesn’t cry until she realizes that things are going bad and she’s getting convicted. Her lack of awareness and her trying to downplay the situation to her family. I mean, kudos to her for being truthful as to how dumb she was, but poor girl I mean, she was just a dumb American girl that went overseas not really understanding that you’re in a foreign country or that you need legal help immediately. Obviously moving forward, the Internet teaches us to be very cautious about going into other countries, but at that timeframe that was not the case for her she didn’t research enough about any of these situations how to protect yourself.
