The #LeeFire near Meeker is now 61% contained. The weather's been cooler and some rain fell late last week, helping to keep the fire perimeter from expanding over the weekend. In total, 137,485 acres have burned. Crews are continuing to secure containment lines and mopping up. In wildland firefighting, mop-up refers to the process of extinguishing or removing burning material near the fire perimeter to prevent it from spreading over the fire line. Cold trailing is a key part of mop-up, where firefighters carefully feel the ground with their bare hands to detect any remaining heat or hot spots that could reignite the fire. In this video, you can see a West Metro firefighter cold trailing along a burned area on the Lee Fire. When firefighters find heat while cold trailing, it indicates that the fire is not entirely out and there are still embers or hot spots smoldering, even if there are no visible flames. Here's what they can do to make sure it's out: - locate and isolate the hot spot: firefighters use tools like Pulaskis or shovels to carefully expose and isolate the detected heat source. - extinguish with water and soil: they then apply water to cool down the area and extinguish any remaining embers or smoldering debris. - break apart and mix: to ensure the hot spot is completely out, they might break apart smoldering materials like logs or duff and mix it with mineral soil to suffocate any remaining heat. Effective cold trailing and mop up take time. But it's the best way to ensure that containment lines will hold. #westmetrofirerescue #colorado #firefightersoftiktok #fyp
