@barak_a_: This TT is half lighthearted irony and jokes but also kind of real. If you have any examples of British pessimism/misery in popular culture then plz add #blackbritish #blackdiaspora #british #britishhumour
I experienced this in London and Paris too. The misery is palpable. And I’m from Philly, so that’s saying a lot.

Radical optimism is rebellion but its often read as naïveté. We find that small minded and insulting. It’s cultural and I could go on but its something I quite like abt America that I didn’t realize was a thing before traveling abroad

This...actually makes sense given what I've seen on this app from Black Brits. Thank you for taking the time to explain. I hope Black Brits lean into hope and radical optimism. It will make you less miserable lol. But also, nothing changes if you don't fight for the change. And change starts with hope.

This reminds me of living in Chicago. People that lived there for over 40 years would complain every winter 😭

Fascinating video, might be off but I think of the ‘bus aunty’ Bemi who stands on the road smiling though one second away from being smushed to smithereens. I think she performs a kind of postmodern pessimism in her work though it’s engaged with as comedy/iconic

It’s not just a mindset thing, the UK environment genuinely affects mood. The constant grey skies and low sunlight messes with people's brain chemistry, causing fatigue and low energy. The dull colour buildings and lack of green beautiful spaces also contribute to higher rates of depression. Even the weather itself impacts the mood subconsciously. That’s why British people often feel lighter and more optimistic when they leave the UK, it’s not in their head, the heaviness is real here. Whereas, Scandinavia has darker winters than the UK but people are generally happier. They embrace it with things like 'hygge' in Denmark. Their homes and cities are designed for wellbeing, and light therapy is commonly used in winter. The UK just takes a “get on with it" stoic approach, which doesn’t help. Instead of adapting to the gloom, we just endure it, and that’s why the heaviness and misery sticks.

This was very helpful. Someone else mentioned the misery thing, but you gave it context and I appreciate your perspective. Finding joy wherever we can is definitely what we do to survive.

Is it just a Scottish thing that we literally start every work day by greeting everyone with "cant be arsed today" then repeat this throughout the day & we will no doubt repeat this until retirement?
