All of this except, God is not trying to check and see if he can trust you, he's teaching you how to trust him. Above and beyond life's challenges, comforts and in all circumstances. That's the point. We are the ones who get the privilege of being protected as such. It's not God who gets the privilege, we do. And at some point down that road one really starts to see just how futile and unnecessary a everything can be unless it is rooted in God's love accompanied by the excellency of God's truth and bathed in humility and selflessness. When you have to sit around watching other people cut corners to get what they want while you humbly and patiently wait on the Lord to grant your desires according as he wants, a lot is exposed in-between.
