This isn’t true, when I was learning English (my native language) I asked my mom for some tips and then I learned the whole language in 1 week

Do you recommend any language learning apps that don’t use genAI? I’m an artist and don’t wish to support that but want to learn

I feel like I've finally turned a corner with my German-learning journey. I am almost 2 years in. I can now understand what i hear, even at speed and recall vocabulary for what i want to say. my struggles are mostly verb order, tense and the gendering of words.
Your account has been most helpful and my tiktok is about 50 to 60% german now.

When I was heavy in learning German I would watch shows on Disney plus in German and listen to music in German and I turned my phones language to German

also, listen to German music artists. I listen to @Alex.Eder @Florian Künstler RAIN and Mountain Crew. I'm on the traveling abroad unit on duolingo (last unit on section 2) and I was thinking of starting over after that with a notebook this time around and doing what you said and even writing down grammar rules too when they came up

One trick to get from a base level of understanding to a higher level: live in the language. If you’re forced to speak the language with everyone you find parts that are hard quickly and train that specifically. Had that with French where the school put us into French families for two weeks when we had just had a bit more than a year of learning. Those people didn’t speak English or German. So we had to speak French.

You’re absolutely correct about putting in the effort. Just because, like you, I can now speak German and indeed pretty good French, people have told me I must have a gift for languages. Total rubbish! During the three years I spent in Germany I could have easily not bothered because I worked for an American company and the company language was English. Indeed many expatriates, both British and American, in my position did exactly that but I chose instead to put the effort in and it paid off! Also, some of my coworkers were French, so my school level French improved too!

Switch Netflix to German (maybe with English subtitles when you start doing it) - you will pick up a lot while relaxing.
