I’m trying to place my diction idol, Eve Arden. She was so often the best friend, but her speech was always so perfectly clear. She was not a fast-talking dame. She nearly drawled her brilliant sarcasm. She wasn’t quite the governess either, despite playing a high school English teacher on radio & tv. For those too young to remember Our Miss Brooks, she was the principal of Ryder High in Grease. Christine Baranski seems the closest of contemporary actors to her elegant style.
