The Syrian revolution, part of the wider Arab Spring, began in early 2011 as a peaceful uprising against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad. The initial spark came from the southern city of Daraa, where a group of teenage boys spray-painted political graffiti on the walls of their school. Among the messages was the phrase "Your turn, Doctor" ("Ejjak el-dor ya Doctor"), aimed at President Assad, who had trained as an ophthalmologist in London before assuming power after his father, Hafez al-Assad. The graffiti was inspired by the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, where the people had successfully overthrown long-time dictators. The teenagers who wrote the slogans were arrested by the Syrian security forces, and they were reportedly subjected to severe torture. When the families of the boys demanded their release, they were humiliated by the local security chief, who told them to forget about their children and to "make new ones" if necessary. This cruel response enraged the people of Daraa. What began as a local protest soon escalated into large demonstrations across the city, demanding justice, the release of the children, and political reforms. Security forces responded with live bullets, killing several peaceful protesters. Funerals for the victims turned into more protests, and the cycle of repression and resistance continued. The brutality of the regime’s response only intensified public anger. Protests began to spread to other cities such as Homs, Hama, and eventually Damascus and Aleppo. What had started as a call for reform quickly transformed into demands for the downfall of the regime. The government's refusal to make meaningful concessions and its use of military force against civilians turned the peaceful revolution into an armed conflict. The slogan “Your turn, Doctor” became a symbol of the people's defiance against decades of fear, repression, and corruption. It represented a generation that refused to be silenced and dared to hope for freedom, dignity, and justice #freesyria #fyp #foryou #edite #my_country #respect
