Fair is irrelevant. Blood is blood. Business is business. If you want to do business that doesn’t give you priority over blood…. Unless you want an Evil Empire. “The Farm” is irrelevant without family.

I look at its fair because they didn’t take any risk if everything would have went the other way and you were struggling they would look the other way but once you start making money they want their share

There's so many variables when there's multiple children. Just because they don't want to run the farm doesn't mean they're not expecting a huge inheritance in money from the sale of the farm. That's why it's so important to have all paperwork in order on your end and parents end. Whether it's wills, trusts, rent to own agreements, proof of all payments or anything else that's a contract/purchase agreement.

A farm is a business and needs to be treated this way. You don't see a construction, restaurant, factory or even a fortune 500 business being equally divided between family. Division equals slow failure

Was made aware by my father I won’t be getting anything from the farm it’s all going to my brother! I’m ok with that my brother has put in the work but I hope I’m not completely left out!

Bottom line is this...if the family member that gets the land has every intention to pass it on to his or her child land not sell, the value is really irrelevant

When my in-laws and I discussed starting a sheep farm that was one of my wife’s and I concerns. It’s their land but mainly my labor. Money invested was and is evenly divided. We didn’t want to invest our time and money building it up and losing it if something happened to them because there’s 5 kids. The deal is we get the property and everything else gets distributed to the other siblings, which is about equal value to the property currently. We have a small farm operation. Currently the other siblings don’t have a problem with it and none of them seems to be interested in the farm.

Don’t try to “legislate from the grave” with sibling rental agreement. If 2 kids and only 1 wants to farm (assume both were given a fair chance to do so) farm kid gets the farm, non farm kid gets all the cash/investments. Farm probably far out values cash, so the farm should pay for a life insurance policy for the parents of at least couple hundred thousand that pays to the non farm heir. They get some cash to bridge the gap a little. They inherit cash the farmer inherits a job. Most important a lawyer sets all this up and everyone is made aware of the arrangement while everyone is alive and well. If a kid can’t get their parents to set something up or they say it’ll all be 50/50 just walk away and start your own thing today.

Looks like you have about the same size farm as we do. Milk 65 in a stantion barn. My husband farms with his dad. His mom passed away. He has one sister who lives in the city. The plan is my husband will get the farm and we pay the sister out slowly over a period of time. Not sure if this is fair. He has worked his whole life on the farm. I have an off the farm job to pay for insurance
