So. Here’s the thing about solar powered flight. We KNOW how much energy hits wings on planes from the sun. we KNOW the amount of energy that is needed to sustain flight for a conventional aircraft. We KNOW we can make a plane that’s so wide, with such an insane ratio, that it can fly using solar energy STUPENDOUSLY SLOW. Where is the viability? What’s the end goal? Why not make a rigid airship and cover the whole thing in solar power. That would be fun. The viability certainly isn’t in transporting people slowly, it should be in autonomously transporting cargo vast distances. And the problem with vast distances… the sun isn’t always shining.
