it’s beyond just uni. i grew up overseas and found moving back here that people are very comfortable with their friend groups and day to day and see no purpose in making new connections. don’t get me wrong people are still very polite! but trying to take a workplace or uni ‘friend’ship into your social life takes sooooo much longer than it does in other countries.

Dudee I completely resonate with this. Just wanna I’ve been in uni in melb for almost 3 years now and still do not have a close friend group. Like I’ve got a few good friends here and there but nah the social scene is lowkey dead. I’m thinking of doing an exchange to the US just because I’ve got friends there and ik it’s literally a 180 in terms of the college culture and meeting friends

only true for metro unis. regional uni's that have a large residential area have a very good and rowdy social life. true for USA. The party colleges in the US are in smaller towns and cities where large amounts of people live in university accommodation. but unis in large cities like NYC are more dispersed. look at Uon, UNE, CSU etc here in Australia - great campus life similar to American colleges

Suppose I might have an interesting perspective being an American who did undergrad out there but my graduate studies here. In America, colleges are a business as much as they are a place for higher learning. So student experiences (sports, clubs, amenities, Greek life, etc) is as important if not more so than the actual education at certain schools. I ended up at Bond University, which is likely the closest thing you could get to an American university in Australia. It’s also my understanding that the costs are significantly higher (hence the college are businesses in America). Aside from the population of the US, it’s definitely why it’s not the same. I definitely miss collegiate sports, it’s

American colleges and universities deliberately rig the environment for students to make lasting social and professional relationships by creating an insular environment, but some argue that the trade-off is graduating 22 year olds into the community and worplaces with an academic education but lacking a lot of adult level self sufficiency skills.

I go to a fashion school so I’m everyone basically made friends based off the fit you wore on the first day. I feel like ppl taking creative degrees find better connections cs I ws asking my sister who took law and most ppl were so snobbish

im so grateful to be adopted by my uni friend🤣. But i do see these tendencies and if i hadnt found my circle, i would be so lonely for years and even as an introvert.. that sucks.

No first year live in hall dormitory experience. Universities have been very reliant on international students, where these students keep to themselves. Then it becomes a whole ethnic group divide, private vs public, international vs local etc

Well, my experience in highschool here has been pretty bad as well. There are other international students who feel the same way, but tbh, I sometimes feel it's because of my English. A few international students I know actually get along with the other Aussies because they're fluent in English. I was upset about not having any Aussie friends after 2yrs, but I'm starting to give up now, knowing that uni will be the same.
