I continue to get comments saying I “caused” my postpartum preeclampsia because I didn’t rest enough after giving birth.🤦🏾‍♀️ But let me be clear: you cannot predispose yourself to preeclampsia or postpartum preeclampsia simply by not resting. This condition can happen to any woman, no matter how much she rests, how many children she has, or where she chooses to give birth. Preeclampsia and postpartum preeclampsia don’t discriminate‼️ It doesn’t matter if it’s your 1st baby or your 9th — anyone can experience it. Having multiple children doesn’t automatically make you more at risk, and having a history of healthy pregnancies doesn’t make you immune. ✨ And no, my home birth didn’t “cause” this. I was under the care of my midwife for all of my prenatal care, and she was the one who advised me to head to the ER when my blood pressure spiked. This wasn’t negligence. This was my body developing a condition that can happen to literally any woman, no matter where or how she gives birth. This was my first time ever experiencing postpartum preeclampsia — and my first time being admitted after giving birth. I spent two days in the hospital, treated with a magnesium drip to prevent seizures (a risk when blood pressure is that high) and Procardia to help regulate my blood pressure. The magnesium made my body feel very warm and sluggish, but it was necessary to protect me. As a Black woman, I know we face a higher risk of preeclampsia and postpartum preeclampsia — yet it’s rarely talked about.😔 Too many of our stories end in tragedy because symptoms are brushed off, dismissed, or simply not known.🥺 So here’s what I want you to take away, sis: 💡 Persistent headaches are not “just postpartum.” 💡 Pay attention to swelling, blurry vision, or blood pressure above 140/90. 💡 Advocate for yourself, even if you feel like you’re being “dramatic.”🤏🏾 I share this not for judgment, but for awareness. If my story makes even one mama stop, check her blood pressure, and save her life — then this testimony was worth it. 🙏🏾 #BlackMaternalHealth #PreeclampsiaAwareness #PostpartumJourney
