Marine wildlife in South Africa - Read Below 👇🏽 While most people think of Africa as the hotspot for terrestrial wildlife, the offerings for marine wildlife encounters are on the same level. Great white sharks, whales, whale sharks, dolphins, fish, and more are found all over. Here is how to break it down Freshwater fish - Lake Malawi, Malawi: home to the most diverse ecosystem of freshwater fish on the continent, with their very own endemic cichlids species. Reefs - Mnemba Island, Zanzibar: well known for its beaches and unique culture, Zanzibar is an excellent place to throw on your snorkel or scuba gear and wade through the reefs Great white sharks - Gansbaai, South Africa: the one and only, seen from a steel cage descended beneath the water. This is my number one. Whales - Hermanus, South Africa: from July to December, Hermanus is one of the premier whale watching locations in the world for southern right whales. Whale Sharks - Tofo, Mozambique: the largest fish in the sea can be found most easily off the coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean. Any of these doesn’t require much planning other than time of year. If you’re going to any of these places specifically to view marine life, you’ll wind up booking ahead of time. Get Your Guide or Viator are great places to start, while your accommodations will also have connections and suggestions. If you’re passing through and want to schedule something last minute, these activities are popular enough that it won’t be an issue. Tip: make sure to bring an underwater phone case for some videos!
