🛑 1. STRICT crate rest (or confinement)
This is the #1 most important thing.
Because every time the dog tries to move or drag itself:
• The disc (if it’s IVDD) can herniate more
• The spine can get more swollen
• Nerves can become more damaged
• The dog can lose deep pain (that becomes irreversible)
Strict rest = massively reduces further spinal injury.
For large dogs, that means:
• A gated room
• Padded floor
• No steps
• No dragging on rough surfaces
This is seriously the most critical thing she can control right now.
⸻
🧊 2. Control inflammation (under vet guidance)
If her vet already prescribed:
• NSAIDs (like carprofen)
• Steroids
She must not mix them — but if one was prescribed, she MUST give it exactly as directed.
Inflammation puts pressure on the spinal cord.
Less inflammation = less damage.
⸻
🧴 3. Support, don’t lift incorrectly
Until they know if the spine is unstable:
• Don’t lift the hind end without supporting the spine
• Use a towel sling under the hips if absolutely needed
• Keep the dog’s spine straight during movement
Incorrect lifting can worsen the injury.
⸻
🥦 4. Anti-inflammatory foods HELPS — just not enough alone
You’re right about this.
It’s supportive, not corrective.
Foods that reduce inflammation:
• Omega-3 rich foods (salmon, sardines)
• Turmeric (in tiny dog-safe amounts)
• Bone broth
• Fresh green veggies
• Blueberries
This won’t fix a spinal lesion — but it reduces systemic inflammation, and that’s good.
⸻
🧻 5. Prevent sores + keep the dog clean
When a dog drags its legs:
• Skin breaks
• Pads scrape
• Pressure sores happen
She needs to:
• Keep the dog on soft surfaces
• Check paws and knees daily
• Clean any scrapes
This protects the dog from infections while they wait.
⸻
❤️6. Protect the dog’s mental state
Neurologic dogs get scared and confused.
Just being near them, comforting them, matters more than people realize. ♥️
