An 18-year-old girl from Virginia has developed an incredible invention that could help tackle one of the world's growing environmental problems: microplastics in drinking water. Her homemade filtration system successfully removed nearly 96% of microplastics during testing! ❤️ Meet Mia Heller, a high school student from Warrenton, Virginia, who decided to find a more affordable way to remove tiny plastic particles from water. Microplastics have been detected in drinking water around the world, raising concerns about their potential effects on human health and the environment. Rather than simply worrying about the problem, Mia decided to do something about it. Working on her invention at home, she developed a clever filtration system that uses a special magnetic liquid called ferrofluid to capture tiny plastic particles. Once the particles attach to the magnetic liquid, magnets can help separate them from the water. During her experiments, Mia's prototype successfully removed an impressive 95.52% of microplastics. Even more remarkably, she managed to recover approximately 87% of the magnetic liquid so it could potentially be reused. Her invention earned recognition at the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, where she received a special award for her work. Mia hopes the technology could eventually be developed into an affordable household filtration system that fits beneath a kitchen sink, although further testing is needed before it can become a commercial product. At just 18 years old, she's already demonstrating how curiosity, determination and a little creative thinking can lead to extraordinary innovations. Sometimes, the people working towards solutions to the world's biggest problems are still sitting in high school classrooms. ❤️
