And the only child that could have made everything he fought for possible, ended up killing him because of his hatred. Also, even though fear is efficient at the moment, in the long run, it would have caused rebellion after rebellion. He kept the realm united with stitches, but it would have torn apart once more, because someone else would rise against him or another ruler with greater power would take him down.
