You’d of thought the gauges would be pointed for a more accurate measurement or am I wrong?

Dial bore gage is my preference, and a ring gage close to the size your measuring , to set your zero

Why not put it in loose then tighten it then rock it perpendicular?

By rocking the gage into place lightly snugged, the ends only close the exact amount needed. This eliminates play in the rods and helps with consistency. When the gage is perpendicular to the workpiece, fully tighten and remove. The reason this works is the ends are radiused which creates a straight line from two highest points even if the gage is slightly out of square.

Bore gauge is my go to, thankfully we have a very nice set of tri-bores out to 120mm

using a tele-guage horizontal will never be accurate, gravity will pull low. they must be vertical in the bore.

If you can use the telescopic gauge and measure accurately then you are good at your job.
