@madisonclysdale: Lobster Mushrooms 🍄‍🟫 What you should know before foraging: ✅ Delicious & Distinct – Their bright orange color makes them one of the easiest mushrooms to identify. ✅ What They Are – The orange coating is a fungus (Hypomyces) that completely transforms a host mushroom, making it edible once cooked. ✅ How to Pick Good Ones – Look for firm mushrooms with white flesh inside and a faint seafood-like smell. ❌ Skip any that are soft, fishy, or discolored. ✅ When & Where – They pop up late summer to early fall in damp forests, often hiding under moss or pine needles. After a rainfall, they can appear everywhere overnight. ✅ Texture – Unlike most mushrooms, lobsters are dense and meaty, which makes them easy to clean (I used a toothbrush) ✅ How I Ate Them – I sautéed mine and tossed them into a shrimp pasta **please be 100% certain before consuming. Ask a trusted source if you’re not sure. I feel so grateful to have found these right in my backyard. Besides thimbleberries and cherries, this is the first food I’ve harvested off the land 🤗
