@tilscience: Scientists just found 13 ancient teeth in Ethiopia that may rewrite human evolution The teeth dated to 2.8 million years ago, provide a piece of evidence that supports a theory called "budding cladogenesis”: the idea that evolution is messy, overlapping, and way more complex than textbooks suggest. As opposed to the original concept that humans neatly evolved from one species into another like an assembly line. But as new information is unearthed, like these teeth, that traditional narrative becomes less and less likely. But it still doesn’t answer the bigger question of why did humans, of all other species, survive to modern day? If I know anything about humans, we probably killed off the other species

My completely armchair history theory is multiple human species coexisting is where our “uncanny valley“ came from.

I thought that this was already proven a while ago that in history there were human species coexisting? And that the modern times are weird because there is no another human species? At least we haven’t meet them?

I mean we already have people being born without wisdom teeth and without i think its called the palmar flexor? (the wrist thing). So makes sense for evolution to take years for things like that "useless" functions to get out

What if, rather than out competing another species, all the species eventually coalesced into one after interbreeding over millennia and humans are the amalgamation of that mix?

This was already widely known. No single population or individual has some magic combination of genes that matches out origins. The oldest fossil is 315,000 years old +/- 34k years but the actual arbitrary features chosen as describing OUR species did not appear all at once. Species boundaries are fuzzy because no individual is “the first”. Its like arbitrarily deciding where the boundary between orange and red is. In addition to having no real birthdate, there was also no single birthplace because this was a complex web of gene flow and regional variation. Even in modern morphology, its a moving target based on what population you arbitrarily overemphasize. African populations also contain signals of deeply diverged lineages, groups that split 400-500k years ago yet still are part of what we consider the modern human gene pool. The oldest fossil is from Morocco, so unless you think homo sapiens originated in Morocco, then you accept that humans were already widespread across the continent (in South Africa more than 250k years ago, in East Africa more than 233k years ago, Central West Africa genes split up to 400k years ago). So anyway, you meant the oldest homo sapiens fossil found so far is only about 300k years old, but given all the other info, that doesn’t really mean much. TLDNR: We decided to call a broad 1 million years culmination of hominid history into “homo sapiens” 😒

I don't understand why Ethiopians would be depicted as white, tho? Is the premise that people demelonated by migrating north not correct?

I don’t think evolution is thought as a straight line at all. We know some population have Neanderthal genes for decades. It’s just a new exemple for gene pool mixity.
