I think progressive moms are a lot less visible in creator/influencer circles because we're more likely to be concerned about our children's digital footprint and privacy. I imagine it's a lot harder to document your life as a mom if you have strong boundaries around showing your child.

There’s a pessimism and even eco fascism on the left, and I think it’s occasionally used as a shield for ppl feeling ill-equipped for parenthood (emotionally and financially.) But isn’t leftism fundamentally optimistic? The idea that a better world is possible?

It’s totally fine if you don’t want kids but some of the anti-natalist conversations that are being had on social media are also starting to feel borderline fascist. We need content like the kind you’re making more than ever.

Wanting to have a child right now feels so incredibly politically loaded and it sucks.

Becoming a mom shifted me even further left and deepened my rage. I want to also add that there’s a narrative that becoming a mom means sacrificing your style and self expression. I love following fashion creators who are also moms.

Technically, I guess I’m a trad wife. I cyber schooled my kids. I did canning and food preservation. My husband works and I don’t. I take care of my cats and grand puppy. Guess what? We are super liberal. You got this. 💕

Diabolical Lies did a podcast ep back in may on public dialogue and generally the way people interact with pro/anti natalism. There is a lot of media on the scary parts of motherhood, but for some reason women who post the beautiful parts of motherhood are accused of “not showing the full story”. It’s a really interesting episode, it might be behind a paywall on Substack but so worth it, it has really changed my view on families, childbearing, and how important community is involved w that

Yes yes yes 👏🏼 So grateful for representation of this kind of motherhood. Also your key difference you spoke to in preconception is focusing on it for YOUR well being in being supported to have a healthy pregnancy - NOT to try to have the “perfect” child.

Follow some pediatricians with kids. May not be as aesthetically in line, but these are high achieving women who love children, love being moms, and are generally progressive. And they have very good advice! I say as a pediatrician mom 😁

I relate to this a lot. I am still probably 2-3 years out from having children but have already started thinking about my preconception journey and I definitely feel strange talking about it sometimes out of fear I’m being perceived as scary crunchy/trad wife/conservative! And similarly, I understand people’s concern but it’s hard for me to not feel defensive or just avoid trying to talk about it because of all this.

It’s sad because pregnancy and motherhood do not have to be associated with regressive politics! Mothers have been some of history’s most radical players

I think the mom content also is right wing, trad wife biased because they’re more likely to be willing to share every detail of their children’s lives online. The liberal parents I know would never dream of that.

For the most part I’ve decided my experience with motherhood is not something I want to share with the internet but I am frequently confronted with the reality that my experience isn’t really represented anywhere online and it makes me sad. I love being a mom and I would love to see more women who I can relate to sharing their experiences

Please read Matrescence by Lucy Jones! It is a great feminist take on motherhood and how fraught everything is/still worth it. (This whole TT was great btw— the fit too!)

In terms of nice content, if you don't mind not living the exact same life, maybe look at some European content creators who are parents. In Western and Nothern Europe we're a bit older and less religious :)

Just had a kid two months ago and I’m so thankful to see a creator I respect start talking about this!!! As a progressive person who lives in NYC, I can’t stand the hyper conservative mom posts. Love this discourse, thank you for sharing!!

as someone who watched my mom and a lot of other moms accidentally fall down these pipelines from a very sideways, progressive-seeming perspective at first, the road often starts where the science ended. my mom fell down an alt-right pipeline because i was very sick with an unstudied cobdition, so some of her only resources for help were alt-right-adjacent enough AND seemed sciencey enough (she read SO many scientific papers!) that she got pulled in, it was so wild to watch. i think for people in my boat, we're very protective of progressive women and we get triggered by convos about parenthood without realizing we're being unhelpful.

Personally I think the risk really starts when you first think about epidural v. unmedicated birth. Because what starts as a valid quest for educated medical decisions can spiral so quickly. Being pregnant for the first time and a new mom is an extremely vulnerable place and the internet has absolutely realized and preyed on this. Wishing you the best. It’s the Wild West out there.

I’m all for this representation and journey! A lot of us are scared of becoming moms because of the conservative “tradwives” perception, but seeing people with such a strong sense of self also deciding to be moms is so encouraging and refreshing.
