Gen x musician, here. B52s and Depeche Mode were NOT goth. They were BOTH new wave. Goth has never been a musical style… it was a cultural thing. The first goth kids embraced many bands of different types.

I’m 21 and definitely a younger “goth”, but these people crack me up! I’m not too sure why it started, but there’s definitely been a weird superiority battle online the last few years. People are so keen on defining things to make themselves feel better than others. Depeche Mode aren’t necessarily goth, and hell, most goth bands have said they’re not goth.🤣 People need to worry less about labeling and just enjoy the music for what it is. I only go to 80’s bars and they play all types of new wave to death rock! And everybody dances to them regardless

So funny… I will say that most of my goth-centric friends back in the early-mid 80s also like Depeche Mode, but that doesn’t mean they were goth. 😂

Hahaha no. I was there for the early days of Goth (London resident 1983-85) & Depeche Mode was 100% a New Wave band back then. I don't remember hearing the DJs at The Batcave playing them on the regular. 😄

I mean, they weren't a goth band, but we certainly liked them. I listened to them constantly in 1984 around the time I found siouxsie and bauhaus. people seem to think we only listened to deathrock

I saw them several times between 80 and 85 in Hollywood and they never seemed goth to me. I don't think Martin gorgeous had that going on in the music at all.
