@thegreencardlawyer: ICYMI: In May 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) gave the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) powerful new enforcement authorities: ✅ Order Expedited Removals – Authority to issue expedited removal orders under 8 U.S.C. § 1225 without sending cases to an immigration judge. ✅ Issue Detainers – Authority to issue holds on individuals so law enforcement must notify USCIS before release. ✅ Issue Warrants of Arrest or Removal – Authority to formally authorize the arrest or removal of a noncitizen. ✅ Execute Detainers and Warrants – Authority to carry out the arrest or removal based on those warrants or detainers. ✅ Detain People – Authority to hold noncitizens in custody pending further action. ✅ Release on Bond – Authority to release people on bond or other lawful conditions. ✅ Execute Removals – Authority to remove individuals from the United States once a removal order is in place. ✅ Investigate Immigration Violations – Authority to investigate civil and criminal immigration violations, issue and execute warrants, and recommend prosecutions. In the past, USCIS mainly handled immigration benefits like green cards, citizenship, and work permits, while enforcement was left to agencies such as ICE and Border Protection. This delegation blurs those roles and marks a major change from how things used to work. Because of this shift, many worry that people may now feel unsafe applying for legal status.
