I read some posts that most Europeans were criminals but that’s partly true. England deported convicts to America in the 17th–18th centuries (especially to the southern colonies). After 1776, that current went to Australia. As a result, the image of overseas penal colonies became deeply engrained in Europe. Many people later spread that over all migrants, even though it was actually a different continent and a different period.

I had a 2nd great-granduncle (1864-1945) with a long list of crimes. Starting with prison in 1880 during his time in the navy (he joined at 13yo 😲) because he assaulted a superior 🙈. There is so many archive material and even pictures of him because of the life of crime. And all my hard working relatives just get a little mention in the records when they got married, had kids or died 🙈😂

my opinion :
Douglas has Slavic genes and Russia back in those days under Russian Rule many people were wrongly charged and if stayed in Russia he would of died in Gulag labour camps as millions of Slavic people did.

Just to clarify, Danilovich isn’t a surname, it’s a patronymic, which is common in many Slavic cultures. It means “son of Danil” (from the name Danil + the suffix -ovich). In the newspaper scan, it says: Girsh (surname), Isorof (first name), Danilovich (patronymic). These naming conventions aren’t used in the U.S. or most of Europe, but in Slavic tradition, it’s normal to include the father’s name in this form. For example, if your father’s name was Sam, your patronymic would be Samovich. So the full name in this case would be read as: Isorof Danilovich Girsh (Isorof, son of Danil, from the Girsh family).
