Hi, resident here, I would say 75% of people don’t try ibuprofen first

Carly Potchak :
People will come to the ED with a pretty minimal complaint (mild headache, sore throat, heartburn) without trying any sort of over-the-counter relief at all. I see it happen every single day lol.

You’d be shocked at how many people refuse to take OTC medications.

As an ER nurse I can tell you that MOST people show up without trying Tylenol or ibuprofen first

Yes. I work ER And I would say majority of people have not tried anything first. Or they won’t take Tylenol before they come if they have a fever because they want us to see the fever, we believe you. All that happens as you get to pay 100 times more for Tylenol at the ER.

These takes in the comments, especially from healthcare professionals, are concerning to say the least. Are we really advocating for people to self-medicate without the care of a physician? And if a doctor is recommending a patient just take an OTC for ANY issue, without any other investigation into their concerns, they are clearly not competent.

Dr. Gabby MD :
Yeah, a lot of people don’t even know what ibuprofen is. Not trying to be patronizing we can’t assume.

We ask so that we don’t accidentally give you more if you have taken it in the last few hours. Also it gives us an idea of where we should start for pain control :)

Absolutely yes. I had a 24 yo male come in for a cold/ flu type illness. He was around 101.5.. I asked when was his last dose of Tylenol or Advil. His answer: “well I live alone.” I thought he didn’t hear me correctly so I repeat the question. He repeats I live alone and didn’t have anyone to get medicine for me. He drove himself to the ER though 👀 so again.. yes everyday people don’t try the obvious.

its the equivalent of the IT question "have you tried turning it off and back on again?" or "is it plugged in?". 😐

I don’t try it anymore. Most of the time I think about medicine when the pain is so bad I know this wouldn’t do anything.

absolutely. I work in the ED, frequently have patients with a sore throat for less that 2 hours show up without having tried anything at home first. I also work nights, so keep in mind this is at 4am

it would be kind of a nightmare if doctors just assumed everyone did the "obvious" thing and based their treatment plan off of assumptions

Yes. As a pediatric rheumatologist, a lot of my patients have not tried otc NSAIDs or likely haven’t taken the right dose. Hence we ask

90% of the people that come to my ER haven’t even heard of over the counter, then they get upset when we give them over the counter meds.

AmbiguouslyExisting :
For most insurances to authorize things your doctor has to document what youve done and not taking over the counter meds for x amount of time will get you a denial.
